  JSE SRI Index 2005/6: inclusion in the JSE Limited Socially Responsible Investment Index for the third consecutive year [April 2006].
 
  Top 10 Global Insurance Broker: ranked 9th by US$ revenue for broking, consulting and related services [Business Insurance, 18 July 2005].
 
  Investing in Life: HIV/Aids: The Direct Aids Intervention programme offered by Alexander Forbes Health Management Solutions, in partnership with Right-To-Care and other service providers to combat HIV/Aids in the workplace was awarded ‘special commendation for leadership’ (and 2nd place) in the category for ‘the most innovative HIV/Aids programme and policy’ [August 2005].
 
  Black Economic Empowerment: Alexander Forbes South Africa obtained an A-rating as at 31 December 2004, as a level six contributor with unrestrained operational capacity by Empowerdex [October 2005].
 
  Financial Mail Top Empowerment Companies 2006: ranked 22nd amongst the top 200 JSE-listed companies and 2nd in the Financial Services top 20 sector [March 2006].
 
 
 
 
  1996:  
  On 4 November 1996, as Forbes Group Limited, the group lists on the JSE Limited in South Africa.   
 
  1997 – 1999:  
  In 1997, a successful bid is made for 100% of Nelson Hurst plc, a London Stock Exchange listed insurance broker established in 1919. This extends our reach to nearly 30 countries in the UK, Asia, Latin America and Africa, and to niche markets, enabling us to become one of the leading professional indemnity brokers in the London market. Since 1998, the group has been ranked by Business Insurance as one of the world’s top ten providers of risk and benefit services.   
  “Alexander Forbes”, our common worldwide identity, is launched in 1999.  
 
  2000:  
  Joined the Brussels-based EOS Risq partnership in 2000 with other long-established independent European insurance brokers, now including Diot S.A. (of France), GrECo International (of Austria), Van Breda (of Netherlands), Grupo Assiteca (of Italy) and Ecclesia Group (of Germany), enabling clients to benefit from local and international services.   
  A number of black economic empowerment (BEE) initiatives undertaken before the release of the Financial Sector Charter reach fruition, marking important BEE milestones in South Africa.  
 
  2001 – 2002:  
  In 2002, the company acquired a 60% interest in Lane Clark & Peacock (“LCP”), an actuarial consultancy in the UK, and also Bufete de Consultoria Actuarial in Mexico. Subsequently, LCP also acquires actuarial businesses in Belgium and Switzerland.   
  2001 brings consolidation of a number of overseas acquisitions including the retail interests of Bradstocks, Alfred Blackmore in the UK and Martin Gray in the Channel Islands. These provide services to local and expatriate clients.  
 
  2003:  
  In 2003, 30% of our South African business is sold to a Black Economic Empowerment consortium led by Shanduka Group. 5% is held by the Alexander Forbes Community Trust, which supports causes related to our business, namely the aged, disabled, women, persons affected by HIV/Aids and education. A similar empowerment transaction is concluded with Cherish Investments in respect of our Namibian business.   
 
  2004 – 2005:  
  VenFin becomes our largest shareholder in 2004, owning 24,9% in
Alexander Forbes Limited.
 
 
  Alexander Forbes’ commitment and resources are recognised through a number of awards including innovation, service standards and our commitment in combating HIV/Aids.
