| Environment |
| Due to the nature of our business,
in all of the regions where Alexander Forbes operates,
we have a low impact on the environment. We, nevertheless,
ensure that we comply with relevant legislation
in the particular regions and we encourage “environmentally
friendly” behaviour. |
| |
| Energy conservation |
| Alexander Forbes has a peak-time
policy in its two main buildings in Sandton, where
air-conditioning does not operate on weekends
or at night. Lighting is on timing switches and
only operates at night or on weekends in the areas
where employees are working. An external organisation
monitors billing and reports on utilisation trends. |
| |
| Emissions |
| Emissions to water and air
are limited, due to the nature of our business.
|
| |
| Water consumption |
| Water leaks are generally reported
timeously and water wastage is discouraged. |
| |
| Recycling |
| A programme has been put in
place to recycle paper in South Africa. This process
is supported by the use of electronic communication
and periodic reminders to staff on printing on
both sides of the page. |

| Enterprise-wide
risk management service to clients |
Enterprise-wide risk management
is a critical area which has the potential to
help organisations grow by optimising their return
on investment and by assisting them to capture
even greater opportunities in the future.
Our Strategic Risk Consulting unit advises clients
in South Africa and overseas on risks and related
opportunities present in or faced by their businesses.
In doing so, we recognise that a number of factors
need to coalesce to create the right framework
for holistic or enterprise-wide risk management.
Firstly, risk management must be accepted at board
level as a priority. Secondly, management processes
need to be established to ensure that an awareness
of risk pervades decision-making, corporate governance
procedures and external reporting. Thirdly, the
appropriate enablers, namely people and systems
that facilitate management decisions, must be
put in place to deliver the information upon which
management are able to base their decisions.
A facilitative process is in place, whereby a
baseline strategic level risk profile is developed
in collaboration with each client. This provides
executives with an understanding of all risks
faced by the organisation, from which they can
determine their risk appetite and opportunity
potential within and outside of the organisation.
The process allows the client to be in a position
of ‘no surprises’ when it comes to
comparing the key risks which the business faces.
Enterprise-wide risk management also establishes
the measures to control and mitigate risks. These
include, but are far from limited to, insurance
and risk financing actions. |

| Peace Parks Foundation |
| Through the Alexander Forbes
Community Trust, the company supports the Peace
Parks Foundation where we fund the Alexander Forbes
Chair in Wildlife Diseases at the University of
Pretoria. The management of veterinary issues
affecting the human-livestock-wildlife interface
are issues of great socio-economic, economic and
biological importance. The Peace Parks Foundation
works across borders and therefore has a positive
effect across Southern Africa. |
